What is Podcasting?
Podcasting is an RSS feed with an audio file in the enclosure field. RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are an easy and efficient way to receive notification when new information is available in a specific area of interest. A podcast is an RSS feed that contains audio content.
How Can I Benefit From RSS?
Podcasts save time, allowing users to receive notification only when new content is available. Web site visitors choose the information they wish to subscribe to and can unsubscribe from any podcast at any point. They can listen to the contents of a podcast at a time and place of their choosing.
How Do I Subscribe to RSS Feeds?
First you will need an Podcast Receiver. There are a number of podcasting tools available. A short list is available at http://www.podcasting-tools.com/download-podcasts.htm. Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 7, Mozilla Firefox® 2.0, and Opera™ 9 also allow you to read and subscribe to RSS feeds.
Podcast receivers are simply programs that display the contents of a podcast in an easy to read format, allowing individuals to download the audio file and listen to it on their computer, mp3 player or iPod®. Once you have a podcast receiver installed you simply click the icon or a link to the podcast feed and paste it into your podcast receiver. Some readers will auto detect the presence of a podcast feed on a website and you can optionally choose to subscribe.
